We hope you had a happy Halloween! Now that the candy has been eaten and the candles in the jack-o-lanterns have been blown out, you’re probably putting away your Halloween decorations in favor of something that’s less scary and more autumn-themed. As you peel off glow-in-the-dark skeletons and scary black cat decals from your windows, you may notice a sticky residue left behind. Gross! You can’t have your family seeing scummy, sticky window marks on your windows when they visit for Thanksgiving! Don’t worry, there are a few ways you can easily clean off decoration residue without damaging your windows.
Avoid Scraping
You may be ready to break out the old paint scraper or spatula to simply scrape off the residue. Four words: Put. The. Spatula. Down. Even if you’re trying to be gentle, you run the risk of a sharp metal edge leaving scratch marks on the glass. And that’s something that can’t be reversed. It’s better to try some other methods first before resorting to the spatula. If all else fails and you really need something firm to scrape off the residue, try wrapping the spatula in a soft cloth or towel to prevent scratches.
Raid the Makeup Bag
Do you have a member of the family who enjoys painting their nails? Then borrow their nail polish remover! An acetone-based nail polish remover is one of the best chemicals for removing decoration residue. Simply wet a paper towel with nail polish remover and wipe away the decoration residue. After most of the residue is gone, use some warm, soapy water to get rid of any remaining residue. If you’re still having trouble, this is where the towel and spatula come in. Wet the towel with nail polish remover, then use the spatula wrapped in the towel to work away any tough residue. Only do this as a last resort! While the cloth does prevent scratches, one slip and you may accidentally scratch your window.
After you’ve carefully removed all the residue, your windows will be sparkly clean and ready for Thanksgiving decorations!
